Comparison

Do you know ‘Degree’?

No, no, I am not talking about an Educational Degree, nor even temperature.

I mean the “Degree of Comparison” as per grammatical rules.

But man interprets the exact opposite of what Grammar says.

What? How?

See, we know that there are three degrees of comparison in English Grammar: Positive, Comparative and Superlative. Positive shows the degree of a single person, whereas Comparative and Superlative define the degree in comparison with another person and with other persons respectively.

For example, a ‘Good’ person might be ‘Better’ in comparison with another one and the ‘Best’ amongst all others. In the opposite way, there are ‘Bad’, ‘Worse’ and ‘Worst’ as per the degree of comparison.

So, it is clear that, from a grammatical point of view, a person can be shown in both a positive and a negative way while comparing with others. But when these degrees are applied in real life, only one side—the negative one—is usually highlighted.

We often witness that while describing a person, the example of another superior person is set in almost every case, like: “He/She has got good marks in the examination, but you didn’t,” or “He/She is doing so well, but you are not.”

All these are done with the intention of belittling a person and making him lose confidence. This picture can be seen in almost every aspect of life.

Since childhood, a person is subjected to degradation through comparison, and this continues almost until the end of his life. Let’s describe:

At childhood, comparison is made with meritorious children: “He/She has got good marks in the examination, but you didn’t.”

At teenage, the other child is good at this or that, but “you are not even good at a single thing.”

At the struggling stage, “So-and-so has got a good job, started a good business, or built a good future, while you are still struggling.”

At middle age, when a person is not yet financially rich but is working hard, he is told, “Look, XYZ has built a house, bought a car and become well established, but you are still struggling.”

At old age, “The other person has made a mark throughout his/her life and has made his/her children well established, but you were unable to do so.”

These are the main stages when a person has to be compared with other superior competitor(s). In fact, not only during these five stages, but in between each and every stage, a person may have to face comparison and be made to feel inferior.

But in reality, all these components of comparison are not always valid.

It is not necessary for a person to be better, or even the best, in each and every matter of life. A person who is superior to another in one aspect may be inferior to him in another aspect, or may even be the first in some other area.

But in our society, there are certain standards set by a section of people that are treated as perfect measures to judge a person.

All these activities are nothing but pushing a person towards frustration and depression. And the cumulative effect of such activities sometimes becomes a cause of losing valuable human beings from our society, because the tolerance level of every person is not the same.

If a person is compared with another in respect of property, wealth, cars, gadgets, net assets, bank balance, intelligence, skills, etc., then a person who has less of these things—or does not have them at all—may be devalued, while his actual qualities are ignored.

He may run behind acquiring all these things beyond his ability, and at the end, if he fails, he may even lose the desire to continue living.

On the contrary, if he is encouraged for having a good nature—a quality that may not be possessed by others—he may become motivated to contribute to society.

It is obvious that material wealth is required for growth. Still, the importance of a person’s inner virtues cannot be denied, because wealth itself cannot accomplish every kind of innovation or development. Likewise, inner virtues alone cannot fulfil every material requirement.

Therefore, making comparisons between these two may lead to damaging society instead of improving it.

Actually, what a person possesses is valuable to him, irrespective of its actual worth in the eyes of others. If he is pointed out for not having something—whether material wealth or an inner quality—that appears valuable from the perspective of others, it is nothing but a form of degradation.

And that degradation often makes him feel uncomfortable, which can become the root of many individual problems.

This is the main demerit of comparison.

If comparison is used for a good purpose, then perhaps its nomenclature should be changed to ‘Encouragement’ or ‘Motivation’.

But in many cases, in the name of arousing or motivating a person, he is compared with others for his perceived shortcomings rather than being appreciated for his real excellence.

My appeal: Comparison should be made only up to the level where a person can be motivated to do something good. Where comparison makes him demotivated and pushes him towards negativity, it should not go any further.

Let’s not compare a weak person with a stronger one in any respect merely to make him feel inferior.

Rather, encourage him to do something good by showing him his strengths and positive qualities—qualities that others may not possess.

A person can never be 100% in every aspect. Where he falls below a given measurement, he should not be made to feel inferior because of it; and where others fall below that measurement, he should not take pride in it.

And thus, all destruction will soon be transformed into construction!
