Misuse of Power

“You have no idea how much damage I can do to you!”

“You don’t know who you’re dealing with! I’ll call 100 people, then you’ll know who I am!”

“If you have the breath, meet me in the arena!”

— We often witness such threatening incidents. In every case, one person in power threatens another in the name of power. And when that threat is turned into action, it becomes “misuse of power”. In the first of the above three incidents, the misuse of delegated power, the second of manpower and the third of physical power can be seen. These kinds of incidents are increasing day by day so rapidly that instead of doing good to others, only harm is happening under the influence of one’s power.

‘Power’ itself is so powerful that it can do both good and evil. However, since it cannot be used by itself, it requires a creature that possesses that power to use it. And man is the only creature that uses it both ways. Human power, whether it is natural or acquired, can be used to improve the society and the nation! But in reality the opposite happens. For example, in everyday life, on the way, we often see that when a slender person suddenly has a slight quarrel with another strong-looking powerful person, despite the former’s repeated apologies, the latter attacks him instead of forgiving. A powerful person’s physical powers can be used to do constructive and helpful things, but in all cases destructive and harmful actions are seen. Similarly, we often see cases where a single person is abused and harassed by a group of people. “Unity is strength” – By this saying, where the enemy needs to be subdued by ‘strength’, the misuse of that strength puts the innocent in danger in all cases. Again, it is not rare for a person with delegated power to cause great harm to others instead of benefiting them. All these are nothing but misuse of power. Also suppressing the weak by fear of power/ taking undue advantage of the influence of power/ refraining from using the power of a powerful person if he cannot be flattered, and harming someone who asks for help from that person/ punishing someone with the exercise of another power if he protests against the repeated misdeeds of one power – all this amounts to misuse of power.

A person is empowered based on his ability. Now if he does not put the power he possesses to good use and exerts its evil impact on others for his own benefit, then his real worth should be questioned. In every sphere of society, different powers are assigned to different people for service purpose, i.e. for the welfare of those who do not possess power. But in reality, it is not being used for the welfare of the people, on the contrary, repeated wrongdoing due to hostile exercise of power / ruling if not accepting that wrongdoing / and punishing if protesting wrongdoing – in all cases it has become a daily occurrence. When the power of a power-holder needs to be used for service, a miserly character is seen within him and he thinks that both his power and the source of service by power are his “patrimonial property”, so a little too much use will lead to a lot of trouble! Those types of people, when giving a favour to someone, say that they have no role or power in that task and their hands and feet are tied. In that case, despite repeated requests, they refrain from providing benefits to people. On the other hand, when harming others, the character of the same holder of power shows such an unusual generosity that he is seen to use his power freely in the act of misdeeds. He forgets that nothing is permanent in this world, not even power. One has power today, not tomorrow. He should also be aware of the fact that one of the reasons for not keeping the same person in power forever at every level of society is the “misuse of power”.

My appeal: Whatever kind of power you possess, always try to use that power properly for the good of others, and you will realize how satisfied you will be as a result. And fearing others because of your power/ threatening to harm/ wronging yourself and forcing others to accept that wrong/ getting involved in corruption – keep in mind the loss of power before starting all this. And if you are already engaged in the mischief of society and nation by misdirecting the power, then be prepared to perish under the impact of God’s power. Because no sinner can escape the wrath of God’s fierce power. So, to save yourself as well as for the good of the people, strike the word ‘misuse’ from your dictionary when it comes to power.

ক্ষমতার অপব্যবহার

“আপনি জানেন না আমি আপনার কত বড়ো ক্ষতি করতে পারি!”

“তুমি কার সঙ্গে লেগেছো জানো! আমার এক ডাকে ১০০ জন হাজির হবে, তখন তুমি বুঝবে আমি কে! “

“যদি দম থাকে তো আমার সঙ্গে ময়দানে লড়ে দেখা!”

— আমরা প্রায়শই এই ধরনের হুমকির ঘটনার সাক্ষী হয়ে থাকি। প্রতিটা ঘটনাতেই দেখা যায় যে, একজন ক্ষমতার অধিকারী ব্যক্তি অন্য একজনকে ক্ষমতার নামে হুমকি দিচ্ছে। আর যখন সেই হুমকিকে ক্রিয়ায় পরিণত করা হয়, তখন সেটা হয়ে দাঁড়ায় “ক্ষমতার অপব্যবহার”। ওপরের তিনটে ঘটনার প্রথমটাতে অর্পিত ক্ষমতা, দ্বিতীয়টাতে লোকবল ও তৃতীয়টাতে শারীরিক ক্ষমতার অপব্যবহার হতে দেখা যায়। এই ধরণের ঘটনা দিন দিন এতটাই বেড়ে চলেছে যে একজনের ক্ষমতার প্রভাবে অন্যের মঙ্গলসাধনের পরিবর্তে কেবল অনিষ্টই হচ্ছে।

‘ক্ষমতা’ নিজেই এতটা ক্ষমতাশালী যে ভালো ও খারাপ দুটোই করতে পারে। তবে যেহেতু এটা নিজে ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে না, তাই একে ব্যবহার করার জন্য কোনো প্রাণীর দরকার পড়ে, যে কিনা ঐ ক্ষমতার ধারক। আর মানুষই একমাত্র প্রাণী, যে এটাকে দু’ভাবে ব্যবহার করে থাকে। মানুষের ক্ষমতা, সে সহজাতই হোক বা অধিকৃত, তাকে কাজে লাগিয়ে সমাজ ও জাতির কতই না উন্নতিসাধন করা যায়! কিন্তু বাস্তবে ঠিক তার উল্টোটাই ঘটে থাকে। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, দৈনন্দিন জীবনে পথে-ঘাটে আমরা প্রায়ই দেখে থাকি যে, হঠাৎ কোনো একজন শীর্ণ শরীরের ব্যক্তির সঙ্গে অন্য আর একজন বলিষ্ঠ চেহারার ক্ষমতাবান ব্যক্তির ছোটোখাটো কোনো ঝামেলা হলে, প্রথমজনের বারংবার ক্ষমা চাওয়ার পরেও দ্বিতীয়জন তাকে ক্ষমা করার পরিবর্তে আক্রমণ করে। একজন শক্তিশালী ব্যক্তির দৈহিক ক্ষমতাকে কাজে লাগিয়ে কতরকম গঠনমূলক ও সহায়তামূলক কাজ করা যায়, কিন্তু সর্বক্ষেত্রেই দেখা যায় ধ্বংসাত্বক ও হানিকারক ক্রিয়াকলাপ। একইভাবে একক কোনো ব্যক্তিকে একদল ব্যক্তির কাছে অপদস্ত ও হেনস্থা হওয়ার মত ঘটনাও আমরা প্রায়ই দেখে থাকি। “একতাই বল”- এই উক্তির মাধ্যমে যেখানে ‘বল’-এর দ্বারা শত্রুকে দমন করা দরকার, সেখানে সেই বল-এরই অপব্যবহার করে সর্বক্ষেত্রে নির্দোষকে বিপদে ফেলা হয়। আবার অর্পিত ক্ষমতার অধিকারী কোনো ব্যক্তির কলমের খোঁচায় অন্যের সুফলের পরিবর্তে তার প্রভূত ক্ষতি করার ঘটনাও বিরল নয়। এগুলো সবই ক্ষমতার অপব্যবহার ছাড়া আর কিছুই নয়। এছাড়াও ক্ষমতার ভয় দেখিয়ে দুর্বলকে দমিয়ে রাখা/ ক্ষমতার প্রভাব খাটিয়ে অযৌক্তিক সুযোগ নেওয়া/ ক্ষমতাবান কোনো ব্যক্তি তোষামোদিত না হতে পারলে তার ক্ষমতাকে ব্যবহার করা থেকে বিরত থাকা এবং সেই ব্যক্তির থেকে সহায়তা পাওয়ার জন্য কেউ অনুরোধ জানালে তার ক্ষতি করা/ এক ক্ষমতার বলে বারবার অপকর্ম হচ্ছে দেখে কেউ প্রতিবাদ করলে অন্য ক্ষমতার প্রয়োগে তাকে শাস্তি দেওয়া – এ সবই ক্ষমতার অপব্যবহারের অন্তর্ভুক্ত।

একজন ব্যক্তিকে তার যোগ্যতার ভিত্তিতে ক্ষমতার অধিকারী করা হয়। এখন যদি সে ঐ অধিকৃত ক্ষমতাকে ভালো কাজে না লাগিয়ে নিজের সুবিধার্থে অন্যের ওপর তার কু-প্রভাব খাটায়, তাহলে তার প্রকৃত যোগ্যতা নিয়ে প্রশ্ন ওঠা উচিত। সমাজের প্রতিটা ক্ষেত্রে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ব্যক্তির ওপর ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ক্ষমতা অর্পণ করা হয়ে থাকে সেবামূলক কাজের জন্য, অর্থাৎ যে বা যারা ক্ষমতার অধিকারী নয় তাদের কল্যাণের উদ্দেশ্যে। কিন্তু বাস্তবে জনকল্যাণে তো ব্যবহৃত হচ্ছেই না, উল্টে ক্ষমতার প্রতিকূল প্রয়োগে পরপর অন্যায় করে যাওয়া/ সেই অন্যায়কে মেনে না নিলে শাসানি/ আর অন্যায়ের প্রতিবাদ করলে দণ্ড দেওয়া – সর্বক্ষেত্রে এ যেন এক নিত্যনৈমিত্তিক ঘটনা হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে। একজন ক্ষমতাধারীর ক্ষমতাকে সেবার কাজে লাগানোর প্রয়োজন পড়লে তার চরিত্রের মধ্যে কৃপণতা লক্ষ্য করা যায় এবং সে এরকম ভাব করে, যেন তার ক্ষমতা এবং ক্ষমতার দ্বারা সেবাদানের উৎস- দুটোই তার “পৈতৃক সম্পত্তি”, তাই একটু বেশী ব্যবহৃত হয়ে গেলে অনেক সমস্যা হয়ে যাবে! ঐ ধরণের ব্যক্তিরা কাউকে সুবিধা দেওয়ার সময় বলে থাকে, ঐ কাজে তাদের কোনো ভূমিকা বা ক্ষমতা নেই এবং তাদের হাত পা বাঁধা। সেক্ষেত্রে বারংবার আবেদন করা স্বত্বেও তারা মানুষকে সুবিধা দেওয়া থেকে বিরত থাকে। পক্ষান্তরে অন্যের ক্ষতি করার সময় ঐ একই ক্ষমতাধারীর চরিত্রে এমন এক অস্বাভাবিক উদারতার চিহ্ন ফুটে ওঠে যে তাকে অপকর্মের কাজে মুক্তহস্তে ক্ষমতার ব্যবহার করতে দেখা যায়। সে ভুলে যায় যে, এই পৃথিবীতে কোনোকিছুই স্থায়ী নয়, তাই ক্ষমতাও নয়। একজনের ক্ষমতা আজ আছে, কাল নেই। পাশাপাশি এই সত্যটাও তার জেনে রাখা দরকার যে, সমাজের প্রতিটা স্তরে একই ব্যক্তিকে চিরকাল ক্ষমতার অধিকারী করে না রাখতে পারার অন্যতম কারণই হল “ক্ষমতার অপব্যবহার”।

আমার আবেদন: তুমি যে ধরণের ক্ষমতার অধিকারীই হও না কেন, সবসময় চেষ্টা করো সেই ক্ষমতাকে সঠিকভাবে কাজে লাগিয়ে অন্যের মঙ্গলসাধন করার, এবং তার ফলে তুমি যে কতটা পরিতৃপ্ত হবে, তা তুমি নিজেই উপলব্ধি করতে পারবে। আর তোমার ক্ষমতার জোরে অন্যকে ভয় দেখানো/ ক্ষতি করার হুমকি দেওয়া/ নিজে অন্যায় করা ও অন্যকে সেই অন্যায় মেনে নিতে বাধ্য করা/ দুর্নীতিতে জড়িয়ে পড়া – এসব শুরু করার আগে ক্ষমতা হারানোর বিষয়টাও মাথায় রেখো। আর যদি ক্ষমতাকে বিপথে চালিত করে সমাজ ও জাতির অনিষ্টের কাজে ইতিমধ্যেই লিপ্ত হয়ে থাকো, তাহলে ঈশ্বরের ক্ষমতার প্রভাবে বিনাশ হওয়ার জন্যও প্রস্তুত থেকো। কারণ, সৃষ্টিকর্তার তীব্র ক্ষমতার প্রকোপ থেকে কোনো পাপীই বাঁচতে পারে না। তাই নিজেকে রক্ষা করার পাশাপাশি জনগণের মঙ্গলার্থে ক্ষমতা নামক বিষয়টার ক্ষেত্রে ‘অপব্যবহার’ শব্দটাকে তোমার অভিধান থেকে আজই বহিষ্কার করো।
